Direct Dyes

Although direct, sulphur, vat or naphthol dyes can be used for cotton dyeing, recently cotton has been being dyed with reactive dyes for the most part. Since brilliant shades and high wet fastness properties are easily obtainable, much reactive dye is being used. However cotton dyers have arising from the increasing cost of labour, the steep rise in the prices of dyestuff and chemicals, the prevention of water pollution and so on.

Direct dyes can be used economically and simply for the dyeing of cellulosic fibre. Therefore, cotton can be dyed with correct direct dyes, if the dyeings possess a practical level of colour fastness properties.
